Ryan Murphy is co-creating a limited series about serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

Serial killers have long fascinated audiences, with notorious murderers like Ted Bundy, Ed Kemper and the Long Island serial killer having been the focus of Netflix documentaries, TV shows and movies.

And now, the infamous American serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer will be at the centre of a new series from Ryan Murphy.

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, co-created by Murphy and Ian Brennan, will chronicle the life and crimes of Dahmer, told through the eyes of his victims.

Evan Peters (X-Men, American Horror Story) was cast in the role back in March 2021, following hot on the heels of his surprise guest role on Marvel series WandaVision.

And now, Netflix’s first teaser has landed, showing Peters in action as Dahmer. The footage shows him standing under a flickering light while his next-door neighbour (Niecy Nash) asks him questions about the meat he’s been throwing away.

“That smell is worse than ever,” she probes. “I saw you go out to the dumpster and throw out a whole bunch of bad meat.”

Peters has collaborated with Murphy on a number of projects in the past, including American Horror Story and the series Pose.

He previously spoke out about his casting and the research he had undertaken for the role, telling Variety: “I’ve read so much, I’ve watched so much, I’ve seen so much, and at a certain point, you’ve got to say, ‘All right, that’s enough.’

“There are beautifully written scripts. You can have all the backstory you want, but at the end of the day we’re not making a documentary.”

He continued: “It’s more about maintaining the idea and the through line of why you’re telling the story and always having that as your guiding light.”

Various other cast members have also been announced, including Niecy Nash who plays Glenda Cleveland, a real-life neighbour of Dahmer’s who reported him to the police.

The series is based on the life of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, who murdered 17 men and boys over a period spanning from 1978 until his eventual capture in 1991.

The limited series will focus on the victim and delve into the police impotence which allowed Dahmer to evade capture of numerous occasions, including a now infamous 1991 incident when a 14-year-old victim, Konerak Sinthasomphone, escaped Dahmer’s flat and was discovered, bleeding and drugged, by several women who dialled 911.

However, when the police arrived on the scene, Dahmer convinced them that it was a domestic disturbance between adult lovers and that Sinthasomphone was drunk, and they returned Sinthasomphone to Dahmer’s flat, where he was killed.
