Donnie Yen Update Status On-live Action Adaptation of Sleeping Dogs

According to The Illuminerdi, Simu Liu, known for his role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, might be involved in the film Sleeping Dogs. When questioned about his future projects during a San Diego Comic-Con appearance, Liu responded:

“And I’m probably not supposed to reveal anything. We’re just getting ahead of ourselves. But there’s a video game with an Asian-American main character set in Hong Kong. I might be involved with it—I’m not sure. I won’t mention the name because I don’t want to jump the gun. But it’s something I’m really excited to explore.”

If Liu’s statement is indeed referring to Sleeping Dogs, it remains uncertain whether he will be starring alongside Donnie Yen or assuming the lead role on his own. Further details are currently unknown, and we will have to wait for more information. Please stay tuned for updates.

According to an interview with Donnie Yen by CNN, he provided an update on the live-action adaptation of Sleeping Dogs, which has been in development for a long time.

“I’m still optimistic. Every day they assure me that it’s going to happen. I’m co-producing and working together with Neil Moritz and Toby Ascher, through their company, and we are currently in discussions with some major platforms. They tell me every single day that it’s going to happen, so we’ll see. As I mentioned before, I believe in destiny. If it’s meant to happen, hopefully, it will happen in the first half of next year,” Yen shared with CNN.

Donnie Yen has recently shared an update on his official Instagram indicating that he has started preparing for Sleeping Dogs, after more than two years since the project was announced.

During a conversation with Mike Leeder, Donnie Yen provided an update on Sleeping Dogs, stating:

“I know many people are excited about Sleeping Dogs, but we still have a way to go in the development process. It has taken some time, but we have finally found a writer that both myself and producer Neal Moritz have agreed upon. The writer will now work on the script, as our goal is to make it accurate and reflective of the real Hong Kong and the game. It has been a long journey, with various obstacles to overcome, but Square Enix has finally given their approval on everything. International projects always take a significant amount of time, even for the preparation phase. In Hong Kong, I could have made five movies in the time it has taken just to get started on this one! The good news is that we are all aligned and determined to make this project a success and ready to move forward.”

Currently, Donnie Yen can be seen in the live-action adaptation of Disney’s Mulan.

Following his successful roles in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “xXx: Return Of Xander Cage,” Donnie Yen has gained popularity in Hollywood. His upcoming project in the industry is the live-action adaptation of Square Enix’s popular video game “Sleeping Dogs.”

Neal Moritz, the producer known for his work on the highly successful “The Fast and The Furious” franchise, will be involved in the production of the “Sleeping Dogs” film adaptation.

For those who don’t know about the game, it takes place in Hong Kong and focuses on Wei Shen, played by Yen, who is an undercover police officer. Wei Shen’s objective is to bring down the notorious Triads, one of the most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations globally.

The storyline of “Sleeping Dogs” shares similarities with the 2013 action thriller “Special ID,” which also starred Donnie Yen. Although “Special ID” featured impressive fight scenes inspired by MMA, the film did not perform well at the box office due to production challenges, leading to disappointment among audiences.

With Sleeping Dogs, Yen gets a chance to redeem himself and right the wrong of Special ID.

Be sure to stay tuned for further updates and announcements. In the meantime, you can watch the video below, created by Danny Ho, which combines clips from “Special ID” with the soundtrack of “Sleeping Dogs.” This video offers a glimpse of what the upcoming feature film adaptation might potentially look like.
