Breaking: Harry Potter and Cracker actor Robbie Coltrane dies aged 72

Bafta-winning actor will be best remembered for playing Hagrid in Harry Potter, as well as for Cracker and his role in James Bond

Harry Potter and Cracker actor Robbie Coltrane has died aged 72, his agent has said.

The Scottish actor, whose birth name is Anthony Robert McMillan, gained fame for his roles as the lovable Hogwarts gamekeeper Hagrid in the Harry Potter series and as criminal psychologist Dr. Eddie ‘Fitz’ Fitzgerald in ITV’s crime drama Cracker.

Belinda Wright, who represented him for a long time, shared that Coltrane passed away on Friday. She thanked the medical staff at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert, Scotland, for taking good care of him with kindness and professionalism.

In a statement, she also mentioned, “Robbie was an exceptional talent, and he holds the remarkable distinction of receiving three consecutive Best Actor Baftas for his role as Fitz in the television series Cracker by Granada TV. This achievement, which took place in 1994, 1995, and 1996, was shared with Sir Michael Gambon.”

“He will likely be remembered for many years as Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies, which will remain a notable part of his legacy.”

“His portrayal of that role brought happiness to both children and adults worldwide, leading to a continuous flow of fan letters for more than two decades.”

“Fans of James Bond also send letters to express their admiration for his performances in GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough.”

“To me, he will always be remembered as a client who showed unwavering loyalty, in addition to his exceptional acting skills. He possessed remarkable intelligence and a brilliant sense of humor. After representing him as his agent for four decades, I will deeply miss him.”

Robbie Coltrane received the honor of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the New Year’s Honours list of 2006, recognizing his significant contributions to the field of drama. Additionally, in 2011, he was presented with the Bafta Scotland Award for his exceptional contributions to the world of film.

Robbie Coltrane is survived by his sister Annie Rae, his children Spencer and Alice, and their mother Rhona Gemmell.
