Horizon: Zero Dawn Netflix PlayStation Series: Everything We Know So Far

Netflix is getting into video game adaptations, following HBO’s example with The Last of Us. Now, Netflix is busy making a series based on the cool game Horizon Zero Dawn. They started working on it last year, and now we know a bit more about how they’re going to do it. And guess what? Amazon Prime Video is also making a show based on another game, God of War. It looks like The Last of Us really got everyone excited about turning games into TV shows!

So far, they haven’t announced any directors or actors for the Horizon Zero Dawn series. But we do know that Carter Swan and Asad Qizilbash are on board. They’re big names in turning PlayStation games into live-action stuff. They’ve worked on Uncharted and The Last of Us already. In addition to that they will be involved with upcoming adaptations of Ghost of Tsushima, and Twisted Metal.

By August 2022, Steve Blackman, the mastermind behind Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, was set to lead the live-action Horizon Zero Dawn series. He officially joined forces with Netflix through his Borderline Entertainment banner in February 2020 as part of a larger deal.

The plot of Netflix’s ‘Horizon Zero Dawn’ series

Set in a distant future, Horizon Zero Dawn unfolds in a world wrecked by apocalypse, where human civilization has reverted to basic tribes. Meanwhile, robotic creatures that look like ancient animals rule the land. Players guide Aloy, a skilled hunter and archer, as she embarks on a quest to unveil the mysteries of the world’s history and the mechanical creatures roaming the Earth. The TV series is likely to follow a similar storyline.

The first game in the franchise introduces us to Aloy, a courageous warrior exploring beyond her tribe to uncover humanity’s hidden history. The game earned acclaim for its combat and creature design, but its standout feature was the one-of-a-kind post-apocalyptic concept, tailor-made for a TV series. It’s thrilling to hear that Netflix is turning the game into a show, and the excitement level goes up knowing that Blackman, who did an outstanding job adapting The Umbrella Academy comics into a series, is on board.

In the PlayStation podcast, Asad Qizilbash, the Head of Product at PlayStation, spilled the beans that they’re not aiming for a typical two-hour movie for the Horizon games. According to him, they want to dive deeper into the story. He explained, “You’ll get the game’s story, but we’ll also expand and explore more characters and worldbuilding that the game can’t fully explore due to player choices. Fans will dig it because it brings the game to life and adds new elements, similar to what happened with The Last of Us.”

Here’s the trailer for the first game, which was released in 2017:
