Is a Pixar remake of The Land Before Time happening?

The Land Before Time 2023: In 1988, “The Land Before Time” was released, telling the story of Littlefoot, a young apatosaurus who leaves his famine-stricken home to find the Great Valley. Before his mother passes away, she advises him, “Let your heart guide you. It whispers, so listen closely.” Throughout his remarkable journey, he befriends four other dinosaurs: Cera, Ducky, Petrie, and Spike.

Directed by Don Bluth and produced by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, the film was a massive success, earning $84.4 million against its $12 million budget and receiving widespread acclaim from critics. This triumph led to a franchise that included direct-to-video sequels with sing-along versions and a TV series in the mid-2000s.

Importantly, “The Land Before Time” was not created by Disney. Nevertheless, there are rumors circulating about a possible Pixar remake of the movie in the near future. Here’s what you need to be aware of.

New poster Teases?

The Land Before Time 2023: A poster for a Disney remake of The Land Before Time has gained widespread attention, causing fans to question its authenticity. The project appears to be a collaboration between Disney and Pixar, departing from the original 2D animation style in favor of a more contemporary 3D look. The poster features three small dinosaurs prominently – presumably the series mainstays Littlefoot, Cera, and the lovable Ducky.

Why Disney is Not Making Land Before Time

Despite the excitement from fans about the prospect of a Land Before Time remake, Disney cannot undertake such a project. The reason is that Universal currently holds the rights to the franchise, as it has since the beginning. Therefore, any potential remake or continuation would need to be pursued by Universal rather than Disney.

Interestingly, Don Bluth, the filmmaker and director of the original Land Before Time film, was actually let go from Disney in the early 1980s. This led him to establish an independent animation studio that would later produce the highly successful prehistoric blockbuster.

Universal continued working on The Land Before Time franchise until relatively recently, producing the 14th film in 2016. While there’s always a chance the studio could return to it, maybe even with a remake, there are currently no plans to do so. The franchise is currently inactive, residing in Universal’s collection of intellectual properties.

Perhaps it’s for the best. While the first Land Before Time film holds a special place in many hearts and had a theatrical release, the subsequent 13 movies in the series went straight to video. Unfortunately, the franchise’s popularity declined over time with these direct-to-video releases.
