“Announcement Video Honors Comic-Book Legend’s 100th Birthday with a Special Tribute”
On Wednesday, Marvel announced that a documentary celebrating the life and legacy of Stan Lee will be released on Disney+ in 2023, coinciding with what would have been his 100th birthday.
The teaser for the documentary titled “Stan Lee” was shared by the entertainment company on its Instagram account. The caption accompanying the post read: “100 years of dreaming. 100 years of creating. 100 years of Stan Lee.”
Stan Lee passed away in November 2018 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 95 years old at the time of his death.
Marvel intends to honor the enduring legacy of Stan Lee, recognizing his contributions as a co-creator of numerous iconic characters in the comic-book world. These characters include Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Black Panther, Hulk, X-Men, Thor, Silver Surfer, Ant-Man, Nick Fury, and many others.
Stan Lee’s journey in the comic-book industry started in 1939 when he joined Timely Comics, which later evolved into Marvel. Over the following years, he progressed from an interim editor to an editor. In the 1960s, he took on the roles of writer and editor-in-chief at Marvel Comics, and in 1972, he assumed the position of publisher. Throughout his career, Lee became the public face of Marvel and a source of inspiration for comic-book enthusiasts around the globe. He also made memorable cameo appearances in various Marvel film and television projects, adding to his enduring presence in popular culture.
“Stan Lee was truly exceptional, just like the characters he brought to life,” remarked Disney CEO Bob Iger in a statement after Lee’s passing. “He was a superhero in his own regard, cherished by Marvel fans worldwide. Stan had the ability to inspire, entertain, and foster connections. The vastness of his imagination was matched only by the immense compassion he possessed.”
Earlier this year, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Marvel had entered into a 20-year agreement with Stan Lee Universe, a collaboration between Genius Brands International and POW! Entertainment. This deal granted Marvel the license to utilize Stan Lee’s name and likeness in various forms of media, including films, television projects, and even Disney theme parks. The partnership aimed to further celebrate and honor Stan Lee’s enduring legacy in the realm of storytelling and entertainment.
