The Goonies 2 Should Be a Legacy Sequel Like Top Gun: Maverick, Insists Corey Feldman

The Goonies star Corey Feldman backs a legacy sequel much like Top Gun: Maverick, rather than a reboot akin to the 2016 Ghostbusters outing. Speaking at a panel during Tennessee’s Fanboy Knoxville convention, 80s movie legend Feldman, who plays Clark “Mouth” Devereaux in the 1985 original, dismissed the idea of a remake, saying, “Let’s hope not. Those remakes, they ruin everything.”

“You mean a sequel? You don’t want a remake, because that’s what they did with Ghostbusters with the girls. No, no, no. You want like a Top Gun sequel, right? They did it right with Top Gun.”

Released in 1985, and directed by Richard Donner, The Goonies follows a group of kids who live in the “Goon Docks” neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon. They must come together to attempt to save their homes from foreclosure and, in doing so, discover an old treasure map that takes them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate.

Talk of a sequel has happened quite often over the last few years, with fans of the treasured classic concerned about how the Goonies would return. Clearly, Feldman is not a fan of the remake suggestion and points to the hugely successful Top Gun: Maverick as an example of how to do The Goonies 2 properly.

Following the death of director Richard Donner, the idea of a Goonies sequel has faded somewhat. Though Corey Feldman has previously said that, should the right director be found, a legacy sequel could still go ahead. “One of the things Mel mentioned to me, because we started talking about Lethal Weapon 5 vs. Goonies 2 and that whole debacle, and I said I knew that there was no way he could have pulled off Lethal 5… So, Mel says to me, ‘Well, you know, people have been saying maybe I should just direct it.’ And I said, ‘You should! That would be great.’ So, who knows,” Feldman said. “The point of that was, maybe this will encourage Mel to take over the helm and direct Lethal Weapon 5, and maybe one of us will be inspired to take over the helm and direct The Goonies 2.”

A Sequel, The Goonies II: Never Say Die, Was Written & Pitched by the Creator of The Goldbergs

While there does not appear to be a Goonies 2 on the cards right now, The Goonies star Joe Pantoliano did recently reveal that a sequel was written and pitched by the creator of The Goldbergs, Adam F. Goldberg. “Apparently, he pitched Donner an idea — he would only show us the first three pages,” Pantoliano revealed. “That was the sequel version. I think, with the success of all of these sequel movies — Bad Boys for Life, Top Gun [Maverick] — for some reason, people really like going back and seeing these characters brought back to life. So I would hope we get to do another one with everybody.”

The follow-up would have been titled The Goonies II: Never Say Die and would have aimed to continue the current trend of legacy sequels, bringing back aged versions of the familiar characters for an all-new adventure.

Of course, The Goonies II: Never Say Die hasn’t happened (not yet, anyway), but Goonies fans will soon be treated to more Goonies material courtesy of Disney+. The streaming platform will release the Goonies-centered project, titled Our Time, which follows a group of young, aspiring filmmakers who attempt to remake the beloved Richard Donner movie on a shoe-string budget.
