In 2021, the confirmation came that they would adapt the PlayStation-exclusive game Ghost of Tsushima into a film. Since the announcement, fans of the game have been eagerly awaiting any updates about the film.
Studios have finally learned from their mistakes after years of disappointing video game adaptations on the big screen. PlayStation is leading the way by establishing a production company to oversee the adaptation of their popular games. This approach grants PlayStation greater control over the adaptations, ensuring that their beloved games receive proper treatment in the film. One exciting project in development is the Ghost of Tsushima movie, helmed by acclaimed director Chad Stahelski, renowned for his work on the John Wick series. Set in 1274 Japan, the game’s narrative revolves around Jin Sakai, a samurai warrior fighting against the Mongol Empire to protect his homeland of Tsushima.
Ghost of Tsushima Movie Director Gives Update After The Last of Us Success
In a recent interview with the Post Credit Podcast, Stahelski shared insights into his involvement with the live-action adaptation. He mentioned the positive impact of The Last of Us adaptation’s success on the perception of video game adaptations. Stahelski also revealed that he is currently working on two films, Ghost of Tsushima and Rainbow Six, the latter featuring Michael B. Jordan.
“I hope that The Last of Us shines a further light on upcoming video game adaptions. Rainbow Six, Ghost of Tsushima I’m working on. Both are fantastic projects that I really hope come to fruition. But Ghost… it’s got an amazing story. It’s an anti-samurai samurai movie. It’s got great thematics. We have a lot of push on that and a lot of interest because Last of Us pushing that, yes, the curse of video game-to-movie is kind of lifted. It can be done. You’ve just got to give it love and attention. And Ghost, of probably all the other video game [movies] in development, I think that’s the one that’s going to land,” Stahelski said.
Everything We Know About The Ghost of Tsushima Movie
The Ghost of Tsushima movie adaptation was initially announced in early 2021. Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions joined forces to develop the film, with Stahelski chosen as the director. Stahelski is renowned for his involvement in the successful John Wick franchise, having co-directed the first film and directed the sequels. He will also serve as a producer alongside Alex Young and Jason Spitz from 87Eleven Entertainment, as well as Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan from PlayStation Productions. Additionally, Peter Kang from Sucker Punch will serve as an executive producer.
At the time, the Ghost of Tsushima movie was part of a lineup of game adaptations being developed by PlayStation Productions. Not much information has been disclosed about the Ghost of Tsushima movie’s plot yet. However, Stahelski has hinted that the film will stay true to its source material. Accordingly, it will revolve around the Mongol invasion of Tsushima. However, it remains uncertain if Jin Sakai will remain the main character. Stahelski has expressed his interest in producing the entire movie in Japanese, with a Japanese cast, to maintain cultural authenticity for the story and its characters. He has mentioned that Sony is fully supportive of this approach.
