Gladiator 2: All we know so far

After decades of rumors and speculation, the historical epic Gladiator is finally getting a long-awaited sequel with Gladiator 2.

Gladiator, widely considered to be one of the best movies of all time, told the story of the Roman general Maximus. He faces a problem when the son of Caesar Marcus Aurelius, Commodus (played by Joaquin Phoenix), stages a coup. Maximus loses his rank and becomes a slave in Rome’s gladiator arenas. Meanwhile, Commodus orders the killing of Maximus’s wife and child. Angry and seeking revenge, Maximus uses his military skills to climb the gladiator ranks, becoming a symbol of hope for the mistreated people of Rome.

The movie’s impressive size, skillful filmmaking, and exciting story earned it 12 Academy Award nominations. It won five awards, including the highly sought-after Best Picture. Since then, Gladiator is seen as a praised classic by both critics and viewers. With Maximus dying in the final duel, it seemed like the Gladiator story was finished. However, we now know that Ridley Scott has intentions to continue the Gladiator story.

As of November 14, 2023, Ridley Scott shared that filming for Gladiator 2 would restart following the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike. According to Scott, about half of the filming is done, estimating it at around 90 minutes of footage. In an interview with Deadline, he mentioned, “We shot about 90 minutes, at least that’s finished. It’s really getting the sets cleaned up, they’re already built. I got another 90 minutes to go.”

Gladiator 2 plot

The plot of Gladiator 2 is set two decades after the events of the first film, focusing on a grown-up Lucius, who is now inheriting Maximus’ legacy. Lucius, the son of Lucilla (played by Connie Nielsen), witnessed Maximus’ heroic story in Gladiator. Instead of claiming his rightful position as Caesar, Lucius was inspired by Maximus’ sacrifice and courage. In Gladiator 2, we can expect to see Lucius as a mature man, engaging in battles in the arena while facing challenges from his political connections.

Movie cast

The cast for Gladiator 2 is growing, with several well-known actors joining the project. Paul Mescal, an Academy Award-nominated actor known for his role in Aftersun, will play the lead role of Lucius. In the original Gladiator, Lucius was the son of Roman Empress Lucilla and Lucius Verus, and the nephew of the villainous Roman Emperor Commodus. While Spencer Treat Clark portrayed the character in the original film, Paul Mescal will be taking on the role in the sequel.

Fred Hechinger is going to be Emperor Geta in Gladiator 2, a role that was initially rumored for Barry Keoghan. Emperor Geta was a real Roman ruler from 198 to 211. Looking at Geta’s history, it’s uncertain if he will be a bad guy taking over after Commodus. But in Gladiator 2, the story might change historical facts for a better narrative. Another newcomer to the Gladiator 2 team is Joseph Quinn from Stranger Things, and he will be playing Emperor Caracalla.

In Gladiator 2, some characters who survived in the first movie will be back. Connie Nielsen will reprise her role as Lucilla, who is Lucius’ mother, and Djimon Hounsou is returning as Juba, a former gladiator. Derek Jacobi will also come back as Senator Gracchus, a member of the Roman Senate. There are also new actors in the cast with roles yet to be revealed. Pedro Pascal is part of the Gladiator 2 cast, but the character he will play is still unknown. Other actors, like May Calamawy, Lior Raz, Peter Mensah, and Matt Lucas, have also joined, and their roles are yet to be disclosed.

Denzel Washington, a two-time Academy Award winner, is set to appear in Gladiator 2. The character’s name that Washington will play has not been disclosed yet, but Ridley Scott hinted that this character will represent a life that Maximus was not allowed to have in the first film.

Russell Crowe will not be reprising his role in Gladiator 2

Russell Crowe will not be making a return in Gladiator 2. Given that Maximus met his end in the first Gladiator, bringing him back would be a significant and unlikely twist. While there were hopes among fans to see Crowe reprise the iconic character, he expressed in an interview with The Ryan Tubridy Show that he felt a bit jealous of Paul Mescal getting the chance to lead the period drama. Despite this, Crowe acknowledged Ridley Scott’s direction for the sequel as “a very smart idea” and extended his best wishes to Mescal.
