Ready Player Two: Following the success of 2018’s “Ready Player One,” a sequel was almost expected, and now “Ready Player Two” is officially in the works. Based on Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel, the first film stars Tye Sheridan as Wade Watts, a teenager from Ohio who escapes to a virtual reality world called OASIS. In the game, he goes by the name Parzival and joins a quest set up by OASIS’ late creator, James Halliday, played by Mark Rylance. Parzival teams up with another player, Samantha Cook, also known as Art3mis, played by Olivia Cooke, and they compete against the villainous Nolan Sorrento, portrayed by Ben Mendelsohn, in a series of challenges.
“Ready Player One” received praise from both audiences and critics for its immersive world-building and nostalgic pop culture references. However, Ernest Cline’s sequel novel, “Ready Player Two,” released in 2020, faced harsh criticism, which dampened the excitement for a potential movie adaptation. This negativity raised doubts about whether the sequel would ever see the light of day. Despite these challenges, the sequel is now progressing in its development, with heavyweight names like Steven Spielberg still involved in the project.

After a long time without updates about a sequel to Ready Player One, the latest news brings some excitement: Steven Spielberg is connected to Ready Player Two. Spielberg, known for classics like Jaws, Jurassic Park, and Schindler’s List, directed the first movie in 2018. However, he won’t be directing the new one. Instead, Spielberg mentioned that he’ll be a producer for the movie, which hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. “We’re in the discovery phase, trying to figure out what’s next,” Spielberg said, indicating that the project is still in its early stages.

In a September 2020 interview, Sheridan expressed his interest in returning, saying, “I don’t really know what the plan is yet… I loved working on that film, so yeah, I hope… I hope we get to do another.”
In the “Ready Player One” novel, not all the heroes, known as the “High Five,” make it through their challenges, but in the movie, they all survive. This means the entire group could potentially return for “Ready Player Two.” Alongside Cooke and Sheridan, Philip Zhao could reprise his role as Zhou/Shoto, Lena Waithe as Helen/Tech, and Win Morisaki as Daito. However, since a lot of time has passed since the first movie, it’s unclear who would be willing to return. Additionally, changes might need to be made to the source material to address its mixed reception, which could also affect casting decisions.
