Avatar 4: News & Everything we know

James Cameron is gearing up for another installment in his Pandoran epic, and Avatar 4 is officially in the works. Despite Avatar 3 not being released yet, Disney has already confirmed the production of Avatar 4.

Avatar 4 is positioned as the penultimate chapter in the “generational family saga” of the Sully clan, leading up to the conclusion of the franchise with Avatar 5.

As Avatar 4 is set to release in theaters worldwide, here’s all the information we have about the upcoming blockbuster:

When will Avatar 4 Release Date

Avatar 4 is scheduled to be released on December 21, 2029.

In January 2023, director James Cameron mentioned to Movie Cafe that ideally, the fourth movie would be released “maybe three years after [Avatar 3],” and Avatar 5 would follow “maybe a couple of years after that.”

“They exist. These stories exist. We know exactly what we’re doing. We know what these movies are going to be. We just have to go through the process of getting them done. Ideally, two years from now, [‘Avatar 3’] comes out. Ideally, maybe three years after that, [‘Avatar 4’] comes out. Then maybe a couple of years after that, [‘Avatar 5’] comes out. So we won’t be away from the marketplace.”

That was, of course, said before Avatar 3 was delayed a year, being moved from December 2024 to December 2025. So that “three years after” timing will likely be pushed out.

To put it simply, due to the delay of Avatar 3, the release of Avatar 4 was also pushed back by a couple of years, and it’s now scheduled for 2029.

The production of Avatar 4 is still in the early stages. James Cameron had initially planned to finish Avatar 2 and 3 before beginning work on Avatar 4.

However, James Cameron’s producing partner Jon Landau debunked that idea. In October 2022, Landau told Variety that they had already finished most of the first act of Avatar 4. They decided to move forward with the sequel for logistical reasons.

The “logistical reasons” mentioned are likely related to the child actors central to the Avatar sequels. According to Cameron, they needed to film scenes with the children before a time jump in the middle of the movie, which would result in the characters aging six years.

“I had to shoot the kids out. They’re allowed to age six years in the middle of the story on page 25 of movie ‘4.’ So I needed everything before then, and then everything after, we’ll do later.”

Production on Avatar 4 officially began at D23 2022, but it has been suspended due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.

Is Avatar 4 the final Movie of the Franchise?

Avatar 4 is not the last film in James Cameron’s Pandoran epic.

Before Avatar: The Way of Water, the remainder of Cameron’s science fiction saga was officially approved by Disney. At that time, Cameron expressed, “It looks like I can’t wiggle out of this,” and now “[he’s] gonna have to do these other sequels.”

“It looks like just with the momentum that the film has now that will easily pass our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this, I’m gonna have to do these other sequels.”

He added in that same conversation that “‘Avatar 4’ and ‘5’ are both written.”

“And then ‘Avatar 4’ and ‘5’ are both written. We even have some of ‘4’ in the can. We’ve begun a franchise at this point. We’ve begun a saga that can now play out over multiple films.”

Despite still being years away, design work on Avatar 5 is underway and has been for quite some time. Avatar production designer Ben Procter said that some Avatar 5 designs date back to some of the “first thing[s] that [he] did when [he] landed in 2013.”

“So, Dylan and I, and Joe Pepe, our lead character designer, started in August of 2013 in an exploratory mode. I mean, even Wētā Workshop, we had been doing some stuff already. The Legacy Effects came in to help with creature and character designs, and we were really exploring the full depth. Literally, I was looking at the date on something recently, and it was an Avatar, what I now know is an ‘Avatar 5’ design, but it was literally the first thing that I did when I landed in 2013… Because nobody knew.”

So, Avatar 4 is not the last movie in the series; it looks like Avatar 5 will be the conclusion fans have been anticipating.

What will happen in Avatar 4?

The precise details of the plot for Avatar 4 have not been revealed, but some information has surfaced.

One significant plot element discussed for Avatar 4 is a “major time jump” that will be a central part of the movie.

“We completed 95% of movies two, three, and the initial part of the fourth. Now, why only the first act? Because in our storyline, there’s a significant time jump, and we needed to capture all the kids at this age since we can’t abruptly have them age. So, we shot the scenes from all three movies at once.”

The same antagonist from the initial three movies, Colonel Miles Quaritch portrayed by Stephen Lang, will also appear in the film.

In a jest in January 2023, Cameron mentioned that Avatar won’t follow the pattern of stories from DC or Marvel, where there’s a new villain in every film. Instead, the saga will feature the same adversary throughout.

“It’s not like a superhero story where there’s a new villain with every film. Same guy, right? Same adversary through the whole thing. But how he evolves is also very interesting once we bring in additional adversaries as we go along. Additional adversaries and additional allies.”

When will Avatar 4’s Trailer release?

As Avatar 4 is still a few years away, it will probably be a while before audiences get a glimpse of the movie through its first trailer.

Typically, Disney tends to release trailers for its major films alongside its latest blockbuster releases. Therefore, checking Disney’s release calendar might give a clue about where Avatar 4’s trailer could debut.

In this instance, Avatar 4 stands as the furthest release date on Disney’s calendar, with the closest release date being two years earlier for an untitled Star Wars movie scheduled for December 2027.

Releasing a trailer two years prior to Avatar 4 may be a bit premature. The first glimpse of Avatar 2 was revealed just six months before the film’s release, coinciding with the debut of Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Considering Avatar 4 is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2029, it’s likely that audiences might get a first look at the movie in the spring or summer of the same year.

Avatar 4 is scheduled for release on December 21, 2029.
