A Separate Live-Action Remake of MoanaIs In Development

Originally intended as a TV series continuation, the Moana sequel took a turn and became a feature film project. It’s important to note that this sequel is distinct from another Moana movie currently in development, which is a live-action remake. In this remake, Dwayne Johnson will return as Maui, but Auli’i Cravalho won’t be reprising her role as Moana.

Auli’i Cravalho explained why she thinks it’s crucial to let another young Pacific Islander woman take on the role of Moana. She feels strongly about passing on the opportunity. Cravalho emphasized that she’s part of a small group of Pacific Islanders in the entertainment world and believes it’s essential to represent their stories. She stressed the importance of sharing Pacific Islander narratives.

Even though a new actor will take on the role of Moana for the live-action remake, fans can still look forward to more adventures from the original version voiced by Auli’i Cravalho. Moana 2 is set to hit theaters on Nov. 27, 2024.
