FernGully Live-Action Remake: Casting and Release Date Speculations

Fans are buzzing with excitement over the possibility of a live-action remake of “Ferngully: The Last Rainforest” in 2024.

In a world where many old movies get remade, it’s common to hear about new ones popping up. But when people began talking on social media about a possible remake of FernGully, it left them feeling a bit surprised and excited. Is it really happening? Could this lesser-known gem be turned into a movie that we can watch on the big screen, maybe as soon as next year?

Let’s start with a brief reminder

Back in 1992, many of us had already seen a few Disney movies. But FernGully: The Last Rainforest was something truly special. It left such a strong impression that it often comes up in ’90s trivia or when we talk about our favorite films.

In case you haven’t seen it in a while, here’s a quick summary. FernGully is all about a fairy named Crysta and a boy named Zak. One day, while exploring the rainforest, Crysta finds a construction site and learns that a logging company is chopping down the trees where she and many other creatures live.

During her investigation of the damage, she unexpectedly meets a human boy and unintentionally shrinks him to fairy size. This is quite frightening for both of them, but as it turns out, Zak’s miniaturization becomes a fortunate twist of fate. Together, they join forces to prevent the destruction of the rainforest and confront another wicked foe, Hexxus, who thrives on pollution.

Disney isn’t making the live-action film

Unfortunately, it appears that this rumor is just not accurate.

The rumors about Disney making a live-action remake of the 1992 film appear to be unfounded. There has been no official announcement from the network, and the actors rumored to be involved have not provided any hints or confirmation of their participation in such a project.

Even though Disney has not officially commented on these rumors, it’s worth noting that IMDb indicates that the original film was distributed by 20th Century Fox, which is now under Disney’s ownership.

Additionally, there seem to be no Disney releases scheduled for Christmas 2024, as suggested by the poster. However, there is an untitled animated film set to premiere on November 27, 2023.

The next Disney movie in line for release after that is expected to be “Blade” in February 2025.

Dream Casting for the Characters of FernGully

Indeed, the rumors about the potential remake have sparked excitement with the mention of an A-list cast. Social media posts have mentioned Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jim Carrey, Emma Thompson, and Luke Cage as potential leads in the movie. If these speculations were to be true, it would undoubtedly be a star-studded and promising lineup for the film.

The idea of Zendaya taking on the role of Crysta, the fairy, seems fitting, especially since she has previous experience as a fairy, having played Tinker Bell in “Peter Pan and Wendy.” As for the roles of the menacing villain Hexxus, both Benedict Cumberbatch and Jim Carrey could bring their unique talents to the character, potentially filling the big shoes left by Tim Curry. However, it’s worth acknowledging that such a star-studded cast might sound almost too good to be true.

FernGully: The Release Date

The rumored release date of “FernGully” on Christmas Day in 2024 would have indeed made for a fantastic Christmas movie outing. However, it’s disappointing to learn that these rumors aren’t accurate. Nevertheless, if you’re looking for some nostalgic holiday entertainment, you can always enjoy the original “FernGully” on Disney+ with your family after the present-opening festivities are over.
