The Equalizer 3: Long since the pair first teamed up on screen together in 2004’s Man on Fire, Dakota Fanning and Denzel Washington will reunite for the third instalment of the The Equalizer series (so far aptly titled The Equalizer 3). While Man on Fire didn’t get the best critical reception, it certainly solidified Washington as the kind of grizzled antihero that he went on to play with aplomb in The Equalizer series.
The first Equalizer film debuted in 2014, based loosely on the ’80s TV series of the same name, directed by Antoine Fuqua. A sequel came four years later, with Fuqua once again at the helm.
At the time of The Equalizer 2, Fuqua expressed interest in furthering the series. With the third film going full steam ahead, here’s what we know and can glean so far about The Equalizer 3.
When is The Equalizer 3 out in cinemas?
So far the movie has a release date of September 1, 2023. There’s still plenty of time for that to shift, and given the consistent movement of release dates this past year, there’s no guarantee a September 1 date will hold.
However, it does feel as if things are becoming more settled within the film industry, and as production is set to begin this year, a 2023 release date seems doable.
Who else will star in Equalizer 3?

As we mentioned, Washington is returning to the role of Robert McCall, a former Marine and Defense Intelligence Agency operative who, in his civilian life, takes on the role of vigilante defender of those who cannot fight for themselves. In the first film, his day job was working in a DIY store, while in The Equalizer 2 he was a Lyft driver (an American competitor to Uber).
What kind of humdrum day job he’ll have in the third film remains to be seen. Fanning’s role has yet to be disclosed.
It’s highly unlikely anyone from the second film will make an appearance, but there is the possibility that Ashton Sanders could return as Miles, the young artist to whom Robert takes a liking.
So far, all other cast details are being kept under warps. The film will be written by Richard Wenk who wrote the second Equalizer movie and is penning the upcoming Kraven the Hunter film for DC/Warner Bros.
Unsurprisingly, Fuqua has returned to direct the third film. Back in 2018, he’d already been looking to the possibility of another sequel, and we can’t imagine an Equalizer movie with anyone else at the helm.
