Disney’s ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ Sequel: Everything We Know So Far

Disney’s ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ Sequel: Everything We Know So Far

The cult classic is finally getting its due with a sequel focusing on new narratives from a different perspective.

Tim Burton’s classic animation style is coming back. Right since his debut with Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985), Burton has been sharing his horror and thriller vision for more than two decades. His 1993 stop-motion animated film The Nightmare Before Christmas became a crowd favorite. And now, the cult classic is finally getting a sequel, ScreenRant reported.

The story of the 1993 film followed Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, who was bored of doing the same thing every year. After stumbling through a portal into Christmas Town, Jack decides that Halloween Town will take over Christmas that year. Accompanied by his ghost dog Zero and Sally (Catherine O’Hara), a rag doll who plays his love interest, Jack goes about the task.

While the film did end on a conclusive note with Jack and Sally getting together, the Halloween Town getting their snowfall to play in and Santa rescued, there was still a lot of interest in what was coming next for these characters.

Fans may have been expecting a sequel film, but Disney Publishing managed to surprise them by letting them know that it will be coming out as a book. Originally, Disney did want to make a movie sequel but since they wanted to use CGI and not stop-motion, Burton refused.

What Is The Plot Of The Nightmare Before Christmas Sequel?

The sequel, titled The Nightmare Before Christmas: Long Live the Pumpkin Queen, will be written by Shea Ernshaw and will follow the power couple, Jack and Sally. However, this time, the story will be told through Sally’s POV and will take place shortly after the events of the movie. It will follow Sally as she navigates her new royal title as the Pumpkin Queen of Halloween Town.

While being queen is great, there are things bound to go wrong. With other realms invaded and holiday towns visited to set things right, Sally may actually make some discoveries as to who she is.

While the sequel was announced in 2019 and there was a 2022 release date mentioned earlier, there is currently no clarity on when the film can be expected to release. The book is set to come out soon, hitting shelves in August 2022. There is a gaming sequel titled The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge, which means the book will essentially be the third installment in The Nightmare Before Christmas universe.
