Tron: Ares is the eagerly awaited third installment in the Tron series, which started in 1982 and was followed by the 2010 sequel Tron: Legacy. The series is centered around a virtual reality world called “the Grid,” exploring interactions between morally good and corrupt computer programs. The original Tron received acclaim for its groundbreaking visuals, and Tron: Legacy continued this trend with impressive light cycle battles, a memorable score by Daft Punk, and Oscar-nominated sound editing.
The decision to delay the production of the third Tron movie seems reasonable, considering the 28-year gap between the first two films. The initial Tron didn’t perform well enough for Disney to quickly produce a sequel. However, as Tron gained a dedicated fan base over time, the studio opted to expand the franchise. Tron: Ares faced numerous setbacks, including Disney abandoning plans for another sequel in 2015 and replacing original director Garth Davis with Joachim Rønning. Now, after overcoming these obstacles, Tron: Ares is finally moving forward, marking the arrival of the long-awaited third installment.
Tron: Ares Latest News
Despite facing setbacks, the latest update on the eagerly anticipated sequel, Tron: Ares, is positive as it announces a scheduled production start. Hindered by Hollywood strikes for several months, Tron: Ares is now set to commence filming right after the holidays. Although this start time in early 2024 represents a significant delay from the initially planned August 2023 filming, it brings a much-needed positive development for the film after a prolonged period of uncertainty.
Tron: Ares Is Confirmed
The idea of making a third Tron movie originated in 2010, before Tron: Legacy was released. In 2015, the director Joseph Kosinski was set to return for Tron 3, and actors Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde were confirmed to come back as Sam Flynn and Quorra. However, Walt Disney Studios canceled Tron 3 shortly afterward. Things got even more confusing in 2017 when Kosinski mentioned in a Q&A that the sequel was still being worked on but was in a “cryogenic freeze.” Despite this statement, Disney did not provide any official confirmation.
It took a decade after the release of Tron: Legacy for Disney to officially confirm a third Tron movie. In a June 2020 episode of the Light The Fuse podcast, Walt Disney Studios President of Music & Soundtracks Mitchell Leib confirmed that Tron 3 was in the works at the studio. He mentioned that a script had been written, and Disney was actively looking for a director at that time. Leib also expressed a hope for Daft Punk to return as composers for Tron 3, but with the duo breaking up in 2021, that wish appears unlikely.
Tron 3 Cast
Jared Leto’s casting in Tron 3 as the lead character Ares has sparked significant division among fans. While Leto has demonstrated his acting skills with an Oscar-winning performance in Dallas Buyers Club, concerns arise due to his mixed track record with franchise films. Despite his success, Leto’s portrayal of the Joker in the DC Extended Universe received criticism and polarized opinions.
Jared Leto will be joined by Emmy winner Evan Peters in an undisclosed role in Tron: Ares, and it appears that Peters will have a significant role in the movie. Additionally, it was announced that Greta Lee will be part of the cast, playing a tech CEO with valuable technology that requires protection. Jodie Turner-Smith has also joined the cast in an undisclosed role.
