The live-action Minecraft movie in the works at Warner Bros. has a completed script, and production may commence shortly.
Warner Bros. has been working on a live-action Minecraft movie since 2014. It faced delays and changes, going through three different sets of directors and writers before settling on Jared Hess as the director and Allison Schroeder as the writer. Jared Hess, known for Nacho Libre and Napoleon Dynamite, and Allison Schroeder, recognized for Hidden Figures and Frozen 2, are now leading the project.
Who has been cast in the Minecraft movie?
As of now, the Minecraft movie adaptation has only two confirmed stars: Jason Momoa from Aquaman and Game of Thrones and Matt Berry from What We Do in the Shadows.
In April 2022, it was revealed that Jason Momoa will be the lead in the Minecraft movie. With his busy schedule, including roles in the DCEU as Aquaman and as the antagonist in Fast X, Momoa’s star power adds excitement to the project. While details about his character are scarce, there’s speculation that he might portray “Steve,” the iconic player avatar from the game. (The default feminine avatar goes by the name Alex.)
In May 2023, it was revealed that Matt Berry from What We Do in the Shadows would be joining Jason Momoa in the cast, although his role remains undisclosed.
Additionally, Deadline reported that Emma Myers, known for her role as Wednesday, has also been cast in the movie. While there were past reports about Steve Carell starring in the Minecraft movie back in 2016, the project has undergone substantial changes since then. As of now, it’s no longer believed that Steve Carell, known for his roles in The Office and Despicable Me, is connected to the project.
What Is the Plot
Details about the plot of the movie have been scarce. Several different versions of the project have existed. However, it’s uncertain if any details from those earlier versions will be included in the current film. One early version intended to explore the idea of “people taking agency over their experience in the digital landscape,” while another version focused on “the story of a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers” tasked with saving their Overworld from an Ender Dragon. It remains unclear if this storyline will be retained in the current iteration of the movie.
Certainly, the game Minecraft has never been centered around a specific plot. Instead, it is an open-world building and survival game. In Minecraft, players, either solo or with friends, create intricate structures and strive to survive attacks from adversaries such as creepers, zombies, and skeletons. The game’s various modes cater to different preferences, enabling players to concentrate on building, survival, or collaborative play.
Minecraft Movie: Release Date
The Minecraft movie has undergone several changes in its release dates. Initially, under Rob McElhenney’s direction, it was scheduled for May 24, 2019.
However, after McElhenney’s departure and the appointment of Peter Sollett as the director, the release date was rescheduled to March 4, 2022. Unfortunately, the movie was later removed from the release calendar.
Warner Bros has now revealed a new release date for the film: April 4, 2025. With this latest announcement, there’s hope that all will proceed smoothly, and the movie will finally be released as scheduled.
