Zack Snyder Regains Rights to ‘Blood and Ashes,’ Script Originally Pitched as a ‘300’ Sequel

A while back, Zack Snyder was working on another 300 movie called 300: Blood and Ashes. This movie was supposed to continue the story from 300: Rise of an Empire. He was working on it at Warner Bros., and it was one of the last movies he was doing there before getting into the whole Justice League project.

He was working on the script around the same time he started developing Army of the Dead. Additionally, it’s an ancient Greek war epic that focuses on the relationship between Alexander the Great and his second-in-command, Haphaestion.

In an interview with THR, Snyder said that he and his wife, who is also his producing partner, have regained the rights to the project from Warner Bros. Pictures. This means they can try to find another company interested in making the movie. Snyder shared his thoughts on the possibility of a sequel to 300 in the interview.

“We got the rights back so we can make if we want it. I don’t know what the marketplace is for an incredibly homoerotic, super violent, super sexual movie. But maybe it’s perfect.”

If Snyder is genuinely passionate about creating this project, Netflix will likely offer him the opportunity to do so. He appears to have a strong connection with them, and it seems like they’re willing to collaborate with Snyder on any project he desires. Scott Suber, Netflix’s head of film, expressed, “The more Zack we have, the better we are.”

The Story of “300” and Its Journey from Comic Book to Films

Adapted from the 1998 comic book series by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, the movie “300” immerses viewers to 480 B.C. and recounts the Battle of Thermopylae during the Greco-Persian Wars. The story revolves around Leonidas (played by Gerard Butler), the king of the Greek city-state of Sparta, who leads his outnumbered warriors against the huge Persian army. Released in 2006 and directed by Zack Snyder, the film gained recognition for its impressive visuals and intense, stylized action scenes, establishing Snyder’s reputation. Although critics had mixed opinions, audiences appreciated the slow-motion effects, striking visuals, and Gerard Butler’s portrayal of King Leonidas. “300” ultimately played a pivotal role in Snyder’s career, leading him to direct “Watchmen” and contribute to the DC SnyderVerse.

A follow-up to 300, titled “300: Rise of an Empire,” was produced in 2014. However, Snyder did not take on the role of director; instead, he contributed as a writer and producer. Regrettably, the sequel did not have the same powerful effect as the original and received a mixed response from both critics and audiences.

Under development since the 2014 release, the sequel to 300 was initially named Blood and Ashes. However, the project has transformed into a film centered around the relationship between Alexander the Great and his second in command, Haphaestion. Described as “a gay love story that was also an ancient Greek war epic” in the report, it appears to be more of a companion piece to the 300 franchise rather than a direct follow-up.

Could Zack Snyder Take His 300 Sequel “Blood and Ashes” to Netflix?

After the widely recognized challenges during the production of Snyder’s Justice League movie, Warner Bros. Pictures has chosen not to proceed with the filmmaker’s 300 follow-up. As Snyder has regained the rights to the project, he now has the option to pitch it to other studios. This raises the possibility of the director continuing his partnership with Netflix and delivering the “super violent, super sexual” sequel he envisions to audiences.

We eagerly anticipate Snyder sharing more details about the direction of the project in the near future. The fate of the movie remains uncertain, as it could potentially find a home with Netflix or another studio. Only time will reveal where Snyder’s envisioned sequel to 300 will ultimately land and what new cinematic journey awaits audiences.
