Happy Gilmore 2 Script in the works from Adam Sandler, Says Original Film Star

Happy Gilmore 2: Christopher McDonald, known for his role as Shooter McGavin in the 1996 sports comedy Happy Gilmore, expressed his desire for a sequel to the film. During an appearance on the Audacy radio show 92.3 The Fan, McDonald revealed that Adam Sandler had shown him a draft of the script for a potential Happy Gilmore follow-up.

“I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,'” McDonald remembers. “He shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.” The actor added, “He did show me that, and I thought, ‘Wow, that would be awesome.’ So it’s in the works. Fans, demand it, damn it!”

In Happy Gilmore, Sandler portrayed an unsuccessful hockey player who unexpectedly finds success in golf due to his powerful drives and the guidance of mentor Chubbs, played by Carl Weathers, who sadly passed away last month at age 76. Sandler and his frequent writing partner Tim Herlihy wrote the script for the original movie, which earned $41 million worldwide (equivalent to $81 million today) and remains one of Sandler’s most beloved films.

In 2015, The Hollywood Reporter questioned Happy Gilmore director Dugan about the possibility of a sequel to the film. Dugan expressed skepticism, stating, “I can’t imagine he’d ever do that, but it’s Hollywood, so you never say that’ll never happen.” He also mentioned that a third installment of the Grown Ups franchise seemed more plausible, saying, “There’s been talk of another Grown Ups, but I don’t know where that stands.”

Since renewing his feature deal with Netflix in 2020, Sandler has been actively working with the streaming platform. His Netflix projects last year included starring roles in Murder Mystery 2 and You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, as well as voicing the title character in the animated film Leo.

Netflix declined to provide any comment regarding the potential development of a Happy Gilmore sequel for their platform. Similarly, a representative for Sandler also refrained from making any comments on the matter.
