Sonic the Hedgehog 3 release date, cast, and everything

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has been in the works for a long while, even before Sonic the Hedgehog 2 came out in cinemas. The threequel is on its way, we promise, and there’s also a spin-off series coming too, focused on Knuckles (who made his own debut in the second film, voiced by Idris Elba).

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was released in April of this year to critical and commercial success, having earned $402 million at the box office and becoming the highest-grossing video game movie in the United States. The movie’s record-breaking achievements spell good tidings for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise’s future at Paramount, which will consist of a spinoff series about Knuckles the Echidna on Paramount+ next year and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in December 2024.

Details of the third Sonic movie have not been released yet, though we do know its release date. Of course, there are facets of the third film that we can make educated guesses about, but bear in mind it’s all speculation at this point.

So, bearing this uncertainty in mind, here’s what we know so far, and what we can glean, about Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Plot

Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s official story summary is unavailable. However, given Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s conclusion and a tense post-credits sequence, we may presume Shadow the Hedgehog will be the following film antagonist to oppose our favorite blue hero.

Dr. Robotnik was vanquished at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 when Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails joined forces to take him out. After taking Master Emerald, an ancient power source, back from Dr. Robotnik, Sonic and his new family make it their mission to protect the jewel. Dr. Robotnik’s body was never found, which suggests that they may someday encounter the villainous genius.

Along with Dr. Robotnik, who will undoubtedly be after Master Emerald once more, Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s post-credits scene also introduced Shadow, a brand-new antagonist. GUN (the Guardian Units of Nations) found some 50-year-old secret coordinates to an abandoned facility where ‘Project Shadow’ was in progress after tidying up the mess left by Sonic and Dr. Robotnik’s most recent altercation. The teaser video shows a black hedgehog opening his eyes and getting ready to create some mayhem.

How Much Wilder Can The Sonic Franchise Get?

The Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise has already introduced many zany elements, some of which were pulled from the games and others that are unique to the movie universe. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 introduced the Chaos Emeralds and Master Emerald to the film universe, keeping their association with the echidnas. However, the film introduces a conflict between echidnas and the owls, the latter who stole Master Emerald from the echidnas and hid it away on Earth, the Chaos Emeralds sealed inside. Because the lore of the Sonic the Hedgehog films incorporates Earth so heavily, there will likely be more tweaks to the game series’ story as more elements of the games are introduced in the movies.

One major change was already established at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 when a post-credits scene revealed the newly-formed G.U.N. discovering notes from Dr. Robotnik revealing a black-site facility related to Project Shadow. The introduction of Shadow the Hedgehog indicates Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will pull elements from the Sonic Adventure 2 video game. However, Sonic Adventure 2 also included prominent characters that haven’t been introduced to the film franchise yet, namely Amy Rose and Rouge the Bat. If Sonic the Hedgehog 3 were to stay faithful to the plot elements in Shadow’s debut game, Amy and Rouge would have to be introduced in the upcoming third film. Shadow’s backstory and motivations would also have to be touched on, which would necessitate the inclusion of both Space Colony ARK and the death of Maria Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

While Shadow’s existence in the film series as a fifty-year-old government project associated with Robotnik’s family is accurate to the game canon, it also clashes with the idea that Sonic is the first extraterrestrial from his world to wind up on Earth. Because of this, Shadow’s introduction in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will have to explore his backstory and explain Earth’s seemingly decades-long association with Sonic’s world. Because Casey and Miller will have to tackle not only the pre-established lore of the Sonic universe but also the new world they’ve built in the film series, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is sure to be a rollercoaster ride for film and game fans alike.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 cast

Fans of Sonic will be happy to know that our two closest friends, Ben Schwartz and James Marsden, are joining the cast as returning actors. Our blue hero, Sonic, is voiced by Schwartz, while Tom, Sheriff Tom, is played by James Marsden.

The actor that voices Knuckles, Idris Elba, has already committed to playing the character in the sequel’s follow-up TV series. Since the actor has committed to the role in more than one production, it seems likely that if Knuckles appears in the upcoming movie, he will be a recurring presence.

Additionally, Colleen O’Shaughnessey will return as Miles “Tails” Prower, the charming yellow fox.

Tom’s wife Maddie, played by Tika Sumpter, and her sassy sister Rachel, portrayed by Natasha Rothwell, are most likely to return. We could get to see Shemar Moore again as her fiance/undercover GUN agent if Rachael joins the cast of the forthcoming movie.

Unfortunately, there is some tragic news about Sonic’s casting. Jim Carrey, who has played the ideal Dr. Robotnik in the previous two Sonic movies, is not likely to reprise his role as the bald antagonist. After Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Carrey intends to stop acting, he stated in a 2022 interview. With this in mind, we may see Dr. Robotnik’s role replaced or the character temporarily removed from the movie franchise.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 release date

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be speeding into cinemas on December 20, 2024, assuming there aren’t any delays. This was confirmed in early August 2022, marking a slightly longer wait than fans are used to for the big-screen adventures of Sonic.

It’s a change from the previous two movies which were released in the earlier part of the year (February 2020 and April 2022, respectively). The box-office success of those movies shows that a Christmas release makes total sense.

There’s been no announcement on when production will start on the threequel, but we imagine it’ll have to start in 2023 at the very latest as like the other two movies, there will be a significant amount of time spent on the visual effects.
