“The Toxic Avenger” Reboot Selected to Kick Off Fantastic Fest 2023

Fantastic Fest 2023 will start with the very first showing of Legendary Pictures’ new version of The Toxic Avenger, a remake of the 1984 Troma movie. This new version features Peter Dinklage as the star.

The new version of the original film by director Macon Blair tells the story of a regular guy named Melvin who gets hurt and turned into Toxie, a superhero who fights bad people, after he falls into a container of harmful waste. The movie also includes actors Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Elijah Wood, and Kevin Bacon.

Fantastic Fest is happening at Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, Texas, from September 21 to 28. They also revealed that the thriller Your Lucky Day will have its first showing there. This movie features one of Angus Cloud’s last performances and is the first movie directed by Dan Brown.

“The Fantastic Fest team was really sad to learn about Angus Cloud’s passing. He acted in Your Lucky Day and his performance really impressed us. We want to honor his skills and his life at the festival,” said Annick Mahnert, the director of programming, in a statement.

Your Lucky Day also includes Sterling Beaumon, Jessica Garza, and Jason O’Mara in the group of actors. The story happens on Christmas Eve and is about a situation where people are held hostage in a small convenience store because of a winning lottery ticket worth $156 million. As the story unfolds, things get chaotic and out of hand due to greed.

The last film to be shown on the closing night will be a brand-new movie called Totally Killer, directed by Nahnatchka Khan. It’s a mix of horror and comedy and will be the first time it’s shown in the world. It’s produced by Prime Video and Blumhouse Television, and the main role is played by Kiernan Shipka, who is a teenager that can travel through time and is trying to stop a well-known killer known as the Sweet Sixteen Killer.

Fantastic Fest has also included some other exciting movies in its lineup. These include Neon’s dark and mysterious thriller Eileen, based on Ottessa Moshfegh’s book, with Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway as the stars. There’s also 20th Century Studios’ grand sci-fi movie The Creator, directed by Gareth Edwards. Paramount+ is bringing the prequel to the famous Stephen King novel with Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. Additionally, Bleecker Street is presenting The Origin, a thrilling movie set in the Stone Age.

There are more movies having their very first showings at Fantastic Fest. These include Strange Darling, directed by JT Mollner and starring Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner. Giovanni Ribisi, in his first time as a cinematographer, is also part of this movie. Another one is Jackdaw, an action movie made by Jamie Childs. There’s also 30 Coins from Spanish director Alex de la Iglesia, made for HBO Europe. And don’t forget The All Golden by Canadian director Nate Wilson, which is about a bike courier who finds out her older boyfriend has a dark secret.
