Twisters 2: Everything we know about the Twister sequel

Twisters 2: The new movie “Twisters,” which is the sequel to the 1996 film “Twister,” will have a fresh story and characters but aims to capture the thrilling action of the original. Just like the first movie, which was about dust storms and tornadoes in Oklahoma, the sequel will also feature storm chasers using a research device. The technical aspects of the original “Twister” received a lot of praise and even got Oscar nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.

The sequel to “Twister” got the green light more than 20 years after the original movie in 1997. Initial discussions about a sequel started in 2020 with Universal Pictures considering Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) as the director. Helen Hunt expressed interest in writing and directing the sequel a year later, but those plans changed. Eventually, a legacy sequel was planned, with Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) as the writer. The aim is to create a modern disaster epic, hoping to capture the success of the original cult classic.

Twisters confirmed

The confirmation for the Twister sequel, known as “Twisters,” finally came in October 2022 after a long wait. Universal Pictures confirmed Mark L. Smith as the screenwriter. Despite considering several directors, the project settled on Lee Isaac Chung in December 2022. The Twister sequel is a joint venture production involving Universal, Amblin, Warner Bros. Pictures, and the Kennedy/Marshall Company.

Twisters Cast

Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell are set to headline the cast of Twister 2, though details about their characters are currently unknown. Rumors suggest that Powell or Edgar-Jones’ characters may have a connection to the characters played by Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton in the original film, but this has not been officially confirmed. The ensemble for Twister 2 also includes Anthony Ramos (In The Heights), Brandon Perea (Nope), and Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders).

Despite rumors, Glen Powell has clarified that none of the original cast from the first movie will appear in Twisters, meaning Helen Hunt will not be returning as Dr. Jo Harding. While a long list of supporting actors has been announced, specific character names have not been revealed. The list includes:

Maura Tierney (ER), Harry Hadden-Paton (Downton Abbey), Kiernan Shipka (The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Nik Dodani (Atypical), David Corenswet (Pearl), Tunde Adebimpe (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Katy O’Brian (The Mandalorian), and more.
