[responsivevoice_button]After a long, dry stretch of having no new movies that involve apes rising or conquesting any planets, we finally have a confirmation that Planet of the Apes 4 is happening.
The Planet of the Apes franchise began over 50 years ago with the 1968 project (based on Pierre Boulle’s 1963 novel of the same name), starring Charlton Heston as part of a crew of astronauts who crash land on a planet populated by sentient apes, only to realize that they have landed on Earth in the distant future. That film spawned four theatrical sequels that ran through 1973 and a Tim Burton remake in 2001.

The franchise remained dormant for another decade until 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, a rebooted prequel starring James Franco and Freida Pinto. That film, which also featured Andy Serkis as the lead ape Caesar, followed humanity’s experiments on apes going wrong and starting the chain of events that would lead to the planet being ruled by apes. That film was followed by Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in 2014 and War for the Planet of the Apes in 2017, both of which were helmed by The Batman director Matt Reeves.
So far there have been nine Planet of the Apes films, consisting of the classive five-chapter series from 1968 to 1973, Tim Burton’s 2001 remake, and the recent trilogy consisting of Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017). Now, with Disney acquiring Fox, the ownership of POTA has fallen to the Mouse House and they seem very serious about keeping the franchise moving forward.

The Planet of The Apes Franchise Seemed to Have Come to a Conclusion With Fourth Movie
Rise of the Planet of the Apes was released in 2011 and told the story of how scientific dabbling led to the creation of a group of intelligent apes. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and War for the Planet of the Apes followed in 2014 and 2017, respectively, and saw the timeline progressing into the future, when a fight for supremacy ends with the death of leader Caesar, but also brings into play his youngest son Cornelius, a name that also appears in the original series of movies as Dr. Cornelius who Charlton Heston’s character encounters. It seems likely that this is the same character, which adds weight to the movies acting as prequels as much as remakes.
The Batman director Matt Reeves directed the previous two entries in the franchise but is being replaced this time around by Wes Bell. Exactly how the new movie will tie to the previous ones or potentially the 1968 movie is something that is not known. Still, with five years having passed since the release of War for the Planet of the Apes, it is a question of whom, if any, cast members will be reprising their roles in the fourth installment. All will be revealed in time, but at least for now, it looks as though the film is certainly moving along in the right direction.
