The ongoing global situation, like with many other movies and TV shows, has affected the production of Sherlock Holmes 3. However, unlike some other projects, Sherlock Holmes 3 has not yet been given a new release date and remains absent from the release schedule.
“We had begun production, but then Covid-19 struck, and the decision was made to pause filming as Robert had another project he wanted to pursue,” explained Dexter Fletcher in June 2021.
“These projects are so significant that you don’t want to rush their development… I know that Robert will ensure it receives the attention it deserves,”
In July 2019, Dexter Fletcher took over as the director of Sherlock Holmes 3, succeeding Guy Ritchie. The latest update indicates that fans can look forward to the return of Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. Watson. Although there is no specific release date at the moment, the news suggests that the film is still in progress and will eventually be released.
Fletcher has a prior working relationship with Ritchie, having collaborated as an actor on films like Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Fletcher has expressed appreciation for Ritchie’s support and described him as “very generous” regarding his involvement in Sherlock Holmes 3.
“We have different styles as filmmakers, and I won’t disregard the brilliance of what he accomplished before. There will certainly be elements of that, but I will also bring my own unique perspective, making it something slightly different,” Fletcher explained.
“He said, ‘You’re going to have a blast. Go and enjoy yourself.’ It’s going to be exciting. Rob is fantastic, Jude is incredible. There’s an amazing cast and a great opportunity. Ritchie isn’t available to direct it, and he’s pursuing his own projects. It feels great to be a part of it. Guy and I have a long history, and he’s very supportive. I think he finds it amusing that it’s me,” explained Fletcher.

Sherlock Holmes 3 cast: Who is returning for Sherlock Holmes 3?
Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law have officially signed on to reprise their roles as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson in the third movie. Their iconic bromance will continue to be a central part of the film.
We don’t know yet if Kelly Reilly, Stephen Fry, or Eddie Marsan will come back for the third movie. However, it would be surprising if they didn’t at least make a small appearance in the film.
While it appeared that Professor James Moriarty, portrayed by Jared Harris, met his demise in A Game of Shadows, there is a possibility that he could make a comeback in the third movie.

“We want the third movie to be the best in the series, which is quite a challenge,” Downey expressed regarding the film. As for the antagonist that Sherlock will face this time, it is yet to be revealed from his extensive list of adversaries.
In the first film, Holmes and Watson faced off against Lord Henry Blackwood, a villain with aspirations of world domination. In the second film, they encountered Sherlock’s greatest enemy, Professor James Moriarty.
As mentioned earlier, it may be unlikely for Jared Harris to reprise his role as Professor Moriarty. However, in the second film, Holmes was believed to have died, but he actually faked his death and surprised Watson by secretly showing up in his office.
We believe there is a good chance for Moriarty to make a return, and it would be great to see Jared Harris reprise his role. Holmes and Moriarty are like Batman and the Joker – their dynamic is what makes them truly remarkable.
Harris expressed uncertainty about Moriarty’s return, mentioning that the last script he saw did not include the character. It is unclear whether this will change by the time filming begins.
One thing that is certain is that Sherlock Holmes 3 is set in a time period that is significantly after the events of A Game of Shadows, which is logical considering the considerable passage of time in real life.
“We aim to push the story further and delve deeper into their codependency, which is the essence of the story,” Law hinted.
“We’ll explore the fact that it has been several years since we last saw them, and we’ll emphasize the idea that they haven’t seen each other in a long time as well,” Law explained.
It seems that the story of Sherlock Holmes 3 will establish a new universe for the characters, potentially leading to spin-offs and sequels on streaming platforms.
“We believe there are opportunities to expand the franchise further, to develop spin-off characters from the third movie, and to explore the television landscape in relation to Warner Media’s plans with HBO and HBO Max,” Susan Downey explained”
“We certainly have ambitious plans and visions, but executing them requires extensive coordination. Just like Marvel, it takes time and successful ventures to establish a strong foundation before expanding and connecting different elements,” the speaker explained.
“At this stage, we believe there’s no established universe quite like the one created by Conan Doyle. He remains the authoritative figure in that realm even today. So, to me, it doesn’t make sense to make a third movie without the ability to explore diverse and unique stories, time periods, and elements. We’re not interested in replicating what others have done before. However, I believe the model itself has evolved and become more multi-dimensional compared to the past,” expressed Downey Jr.
