The Walking Dead: Summit: What we know so far

The Rick and Michonne spinoff is now making progress as they have officially revealed the full filming schedule. The show is temporarily called ‘The Walking Dead: Summit,’ but AMC has not confirmed the title yet.

When will start shooting?

Andrew Lincoln will play Rick Grimes, and Danai Gurira will portray Michonne Hawthorne in the limited spinoff series, titled ‘The Walking Dead: Summit.’ Filming is set to commence on February 13, 2022, in Atlanta, Georgia, and will later shift to Carlstadt, New Jersey, where the production is scheduled to conclude on May 16, 2023.

Danai Gurira recently shared an update with fans about the upcoming spinoff on her Instagram. She posted pictures of herself with Andrew Lincoln and the showrunner Scott M Gimple, with the caption “#Richonne spin-off. 2023. Pre-production is in full swing. We’re getting there!” It seems like they are making good progress with the show’s preparations.

The spinoff, initially planned as a feature film, underwent a change last year and transformed into a six-episode limited series. This decision came about because film production was halted due to the pandemic’s arrival in 2020. The original Walking Dead series concluded with its 11th and final season on AMC in November of 2021. Additionally, there are currently several other spinoffs in development.

What Will Happen in The Walking Dead: Summit?

This TWD spinoff will narrate the grand love story of two individuals who have been profoundly changed by the shifting world around them. Circumstances and an unstoppable force kept them separated, haunted by their past selves. Rick and Michonne find themselves in a new society, one that struggles against the undead and eventually faces conflict with the living. In this unfamiliar setting, they must uncover not only each other but also their own true identities. The journey ahead raises questions: Are they foes or allies? Lovers or victims? Will they triumph in the end? And most importantly, are they truly alive without each other, or will they come to realize that they, too, are akin to the walking dead?

Andrew Lincoln’s character, Rick Grimes, is a sheriff who served as the leader of the group of survivors in the show for the initial nine seasons. In Season 9, Rick goes missing after boarding a helicopter, and Michonne embarks on a journey to search for him during the 10th season.

Scott M. Gimple is the showrunner for the series, and Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira serve as executive producers alongside Robert Kirkman and David Alpert.

When Will the Sequel be Released?

The original plan for the six-episode spin-off was to create a full-length movie. However, due to the pandemic, priorities changed, and it was reimagined as a limited series. Fans can look forward to its release on AMC and AMC+ in 2024.
